All day
August 31, 2019

This workshop will combine yoga practice with the theoretical teaching of the history of modern yoga. To narrow this vast topic down we will specifically look at the theme of liberation. It will give participant an insight about the developments of the practice in the last 200 years in reference to the ancient philosophies. The theoretical part of this workshop will be spices with the Tantric yoga philosophies that form an alternative to the mainstream - and male dominated – philosophies attributed to yoga.

Liberation – Enlightenment – Political freedom

Traditionally the goal of yogic practice is liberation. In the history of yoga the fight for political freedom intersects with the developments of the practice of hatha yoga. This connection and the role yoga played for different freedom movements will be discussed in the workshop. We will explore different definitions of liberation and how yoga can support a process of emancipation.

Body – Gender - Emancipation

So modern yoga remains a liberatory practice. This is particularly interesting when we look at the intersection of yoga and gender. Historically yoga was often described an exclusively male practice. However, in today’s yoga studios the vast majority of practitioners in female. What is the background of this? What emancipatory potentials can yoga have for our personal gender?
